Is the Old House Still There?

The iconic postcard showing the Niels Poulsen house in Round Hill, VA appears

in several different write-ups in this document (and below). Because of that, I
decided to try to find out if the old house was still there.

I first attempted to use Google Maps. I entered what I thought to be the address of
the house but the results were inconclusive. I noted that across the street from the

house (again from what I thought to be the address) was a business – a beauty
shop and I was able to find an e-mail address for the beauty shop. I sent an e-
mail off with something like “you don’t know me, but is the house in the
attached picture across the street from you?” No response … geez, I hope my e-
mail didn’t freak them out?

In 2012 I sent the postcard picture to my friend Wally Johnson (owner of Niels
Poulsen’s Old Furniture Factory) in Round Hill, VA along with a note asking
him if he’d ever seen it around town. No response … until December 2014 – two
years later! Out of the blue I get an e-mail from Wally:

Hey Stephen,

Well, something just jelled in my mind. I knew something about the picture of the house you
first sent me back in 2012 was familiar. Now, looking closely at the picture I believe it is located
next door to the Old Furniture Factory. In your picture on the postcard there is a building in the
right background which I believe is the OFF. Attached is a current picture from about the same
location. Some of the features and windows have been replaced but I'm sure it is the same
one. Hope this helps.

Of course … it makes sense. The house is right next door to the furniture factory
where Niels worked! The similarities of the two structures in the two pictures
(taken 99 years apart) are undeniable. While considerable remodeling has
obviously occurred to both, they still have the same basic look. Check it out for
