Everett Raymond Backman is reported lost at sea August 7, 1945 in an entry from
the ship’s log:
07 August 1945
Fueled from tankers of Task Group 30.8. 0750 Launched U.S.S. INDIANA's planes
for training flight. 0802 Plane piloted by Lt (jg) E.R. BACKMAN (A1), USNR, with
WATSON, R.B. ARM 3c, as observer crashed into the sea, no survivors were found
from the crash site. Recovered the second plane, after search of area assisted
by U.S.S. TAUSSIG (DD-746) and other planes in the vicinity. Fired A.A. practice
using TDD drones. En route to launching point for air strikes on northern Honshu
and Hokkaido.
Junior – David Scott Backman is born fourteen days later - August 21, 1945.
WWII is officially over - September 2, 1945.
