               Notes      Albumen print on cardstock, half seated view of Betsey Shipley Gallup, mother of Sophia
                          Gallup Stanley. She is wearing a dark colored dress with white day cap. This is a circa 1865
                          copy of an earlier daguerreotype. Betsey Shipley was born September 26, 1785 in Hollis,
                          New Hampshire, the daughter of Abel Shipley. She married Chester Patterson Gallup in
                          1808. The couple lived in Broome County and Monroe County, New York, where most of
                          their children were born: Sophia (wife of Webster Stanley; John (born Broome County,
                          New York); Shipley Amos; Henry A.; Jane (married David Evans); and Sally (Mrs. Edward
                          Starr). The family moved to Medina, Ohio in 1828 and later were the second family to
                          settle in what is now Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1836. The Gallups purchased 170 acres of land
                          from the US along the Fox River where it flows into Lake Winnebago. They built the
                          second cabin in what is now Oshkosh. Chester died in 1849 in Oshkosh. She died in 1856
                          and is burried in Riverside Cemetery.
