More Recipes from the Past …

Mabel and Wes Goodwin were next door neighbors of Paul and Athelene Poulsen

in Port Angeles, WA. Wes always had a stick of gum to offer – usually
Beeman’s “Aids Digestion” or Adam’s “Black Jack”. Mabel had a recipe for a
fruit salad dressing that appeared in a community cookbook. As a kid, I
remember many picnics where we had fruit salad with Mabel’s dressing. The
recipe seems quite unusual when you look at the ingredients but it really is

               quite good.

               Mabel Goodwin’s Fruit Salad Dressing

               ½ cup sugar
               1 teaspoon dry mustard

               1 teaspoon salt
               1 teaspoon celery salt
               1 teaspoon paprika

Mix above ingredients to a paste with 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Add a
teaspoon of grated onion. Stir in 1 cup of vegetable oil alternately with 4
               tablespoons of distilled vinegar.

Fruit should be drained thoroughly. I remember fruit cocktail, fresh pineapple,
sliced bananas and a few miniature marshmallows. Other fresh fruit that is
also good with this is strawberries and/or kiwi fruit.

               Donald Poulsen’s Buttermilk Pancakes

               1 quart buttermilk

               2 eggs
               1 ½ cups flour
               1 teaspoon salt
               2 tablespoons sugar
               2 teaspoons baking soda
               2 teaspoons baking powder
