Family Stories
The first two letters discuss making the spoliation claims but the third letter,
and in my view is the most interesting, contains a good deal of genealogical
information much of which I have incorporated into the database. The third letter
mentions “the original” John Jacob Astor and it contains a possible clue as to our
family connection. I read the letters years ago but it was not until I read about
French spoliation much later that I connected the dots. In the third letter, an
individual named John F. Adam is referred to as “ship owner” and the letter also
provides information about how he is related to the family. Did our ancestor John
F. Adam lose one of his ships to the French? It’s a likely possibility. I hope to
research this further as time permits. Meanwhile … working on this was
educational, informative and a lot of fun. Stephen
