Family Stories
The Cabin on Lake Sutherland
And that is also where I come in …
As a kid growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s, our family, grandparents, uncle,
aunt, cousins and friends too, would often enjoy weekends and holidays at the
cabin. I have many fond memories of the cabin on the lake. The Ingram mantle
clock is one of those memories. It held a prominent spot in a bookcase there that I
remember was also filled with old Reader’s Digests, aromatic pipes and tobacco
and lots of games. If I close my eyes and remember back to those great times, I
can “hear” the distinct sound of the clock chime … in my head! I can remember
playing card games and Chinese Checkers at the lake. Swimming with my
brothers and sister and cousins, my father. Going for a boat ride. Fishing with
my grandfather. The adults lighting up Coleman lanterns at night. Just so
many good memories.
The grandparents passed. The cabin was sold. The clock went to my father and
mother next. They had it for many years in a bookshelf at their house in
Vancouver.
