Family Stories
When they
passed, the clock
was claimed by
my older brother
David who put it
on the fireplace
mantle at his
house in Port
Townsend. When
he passed away
unexpectedly, I
made claim to the
clock – now in its
sixth family
household!
But when I got it, it didn’t work!
I only had it for a month or two before I decided to take it to get it fixed. I took it
to a clock repair business called “Remembering Time”. They told me it would
take six months to fix … but they ended up having it for over two years before I
got it back! I went to their shop several times and wrote many letters trying to
get it back. I nearly became good friends with a guy at the Better Business
Bureau because we were so frequently in contact regarding getting the clock
returned. Eventually, I did get the clock back. It worked for a few months before
one of the springs popped while I was winding it and the chime stopped. There
was no way I was going to take it back to Remembering Time though.
I love the clock and the memories it holds – even if it doesn’t work quite right
anymore. It just goes to show how a simple object – even an old clock, can be a
powerful source of memories. The chime … while it lasted … was just as I
remembered it. Stephen
[Update 10/2021: Couldn’t stand it without the chime! Serviced the clock at O’Clock Shoppe
this time. Thanks to their expertise … it is once again chiming the hours away. Stephen]
