Everett Backman’s Journal
I owe my life to Everett Raymond Backman! Were it
not for his sacrifice, I wouldn’t be here. He was my
mother’s first husband. Sadly he didn’t make it out
of WWII.
Everett’s Journal was kept in my
mother’s hope chest for several decades.
When she decided to move and sell her
house, it was given to my brother David
(Everett’s son) and when David passed
away, it went to David’s son, David Jr. I
intercepted it temporarily so I could
make it a part of this genealogy
document. I began by scanning all of
the pages of the journal into a single

The journal is filled with irony
and has many poignant
entries. Everett begins two
numeric countdowns. He
mentions several famous
historical figures of the time
and even movie stars and
directors. The journal vividly
describes everyday life aboard
