Notes Gelatin print on cardstock, bust view of George W. Stanley in later life. He wears a suit and
has a long gray moustache and goatee. George W. Stanley was the first white child born in
Oshkosh, WI August 26, 1838 the youngest son of Webster and Sophia Stanley. His
grandparents were Chester P. and Betsey Shipley Gallup, who arrived shortly later in 1836.
He enlisted in Company D, 47th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry in Mukwa on February 2,
1865 and mustered out on September 4, 1865. He may have had prior service in Company
B, 14th Wisconsin Infantry, but his name does not appear on the rolls. In 1869 he married
Mrs. M. J. Miles. They had two children, both died in infancy. His step-daughter was Mrs.
William J. Pardee (donor of the collection). In 1889 he moved to Antigo and operated a
grocery store there with Mr. Pardee. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic
in Antigo. He died there March 20, 1911.
