Poulsen Brothers Come to America
I made many attempts to find information about the Poulsen brother’s
emigration from Denmark to America. I knew about the importance of
“passenger ships” and “passenger lists” with regards to genealogy research. Most
of us have heard about Ellis Island and the many immigrants that came
through there. Three Poulsen brothers Niels, Bertel and Lars came to America
decades before the heyday of Ellis Island. For the longest time, all that I could
turn up about their immigration was one or two small “bits” of information that
seemed to match up names and dates but was otherwise not too helpful.
Then one day while searching in the library … I stumbled on something big!
Who better to tell me about their emigration to America but Niels and Lars – in
their own handwriting! I found Niels Poulsen’s passport application:
