(Albert) Wayne Stanley Letter
[Note: This letter was written on Oshkosh Public Library Stationary.]
11 June 1985
Albert Wayne Stanley
283 Knights Crossing
Grants Pass, OR 97526
Dear Mr. Stanley:
First, my apologies for taking so long with this letter – we had
one staff member out with a 6 month illness just when another
retired, but I am trying to catch up.
Webster W. Stanley is generally conceded to have been the first
English-speaking white settler within the original city limits
of Oshkosh. Note that I do not call him Daniel Webster Stanley.
I think it unlikely that he was named for the statesman, as
Daniel Webster was born in 1782, only 17 years before your
ancestor. Note also these census listings of name, age and
birthplace:
1850 census, Winnebago County(p.63), Town of Winnebago:
Stanley, W.B. 51 CONN
Stanley, Sophia 41 NY
Stanley, Henry A. 22 NY
Stanley, George W. 10 WIS
Stanley, Maretta H. 2 WIS
1860 census, Waupace Co.(p.477), Town of Mukwa:
Stanley, Webster W. 61 CONN
Stanley, Sophia 50 NY
Stanley, Geo. 20 WIS
And in the next house:
Stanley, Henry 33 NY
Elizabeth 24 OHIO
John 4 WIS
Minnie 2 WIS
