Letters, Postcards, Clippings

will – and likely not fully appreciating the
deal, announced a plan for selling the old
bike, estimating it would bring about $15.
But Sally was still a champion. It was her
old bike. Her pal had made it possible to win
a new bike and she stuck by her guns and
gave the old bike to June. And June gave
Sally her old wrist watch. So up on Lincoln
Heights, you may see two girls riding
together – Sally on a new bike. June on an
old bike; June wearing a new wrist watch,
Sally wearing an old wrist watch. And both
               happier than songbirds.

               REAL SPORTSMANSHIP

               THAT’S why your Rarebitter believes
dictators and warlords and men generally
could take a leaf from the big book of
sportsmanship written by Sally and June last
Sunday. It was a fine example of
               sportsmanship: sportsmanship that displayed
itself in the minds and hearts of everyone
who rode last Sunday aboard the “Andy
Gump.” A give-and-take spirit like that
would have kept Mussolini out of Ethiopia,
could end the P-I strike, the war in Spain,
the troubles of all mankind. It’s rather sad
that some of our vexing problems are not
placed before a court composed of girls like
               Sally Price and June Stanley.

[Note: The Stanley’s boat, the “Andy
Gump”, likely got its name from a
distinctive cartoon character of the day
(see right). A comic strip called “The
               Gumps”, drawn by Sidney Smith,
appeared for years in many newspapers.
Andy Gump was even known to have
appeared in a few risqué, so-called “blue
               comics”.]
