Family Stories
I began reading fiction at about the age of 14. I remember the very first thing I
read was “Man of the Forest” by Zane Grey. Once I got into it, it was as if I could
not put the book down – it was that interesting. I remember that I was shocking
hay out here in front of the house. I would make a few shocks, and then lay down
behind a shock and read a chapter. It was Lizzie Pontine who got me into buying
books. My first two books were from Sears, priced at 68 cents a copy. One was
“Tarzan of the Apes,” and the other, “The Wolf Hunters,” by James Oliver
Curwood. From then on, I was hooked. I bought book after book as I could afford
them.
The rest of George’s biography describes his later life and that of his brothers as
well as his passion for hiking in the Olympics and for picture taking and
movie making. I enjoyed reading it and thank Karolyn Burdick for sending
me a copy. Stephen
