and her granddad. She says her granddad had a strong 'foreign' accent which
made him hard to understand, but his kindness and loving way he was with her
and his other grandchildren went beyond words and was felt in the special things
he did with them. One of the stories my grandmother would tell was every
summer evening she would sit on the porch on High Street looking up the road,
waiting for her grandfather to finish work. When he got home, he would grab her
hand and the two would walk to the grocery store and get an ice cream. They
would then walk around Round Hill and she would entertain him with stories of
her adventures during the day.
Not only was Niels a loving and caring family man, and a significant contributor to
the Round Hill economy, but he was also progressive in his beliefs and made sure
to raise his daughters to be strong independent women. My grandmother speaks
with such pride in her voice when she talks of Aunt Maude and Aunt Llere.
Maude, who married John Lynch, built many of the houses on Locust St. in Round
Hill. She rented them out for income or sold them for a profit. My grandmother
also says that either Maude or Llere owned and operated a grocery store in town.
Although Niels died many years before I was born, he has had a lasting impact on
my family. I grew up listening to stories of the Poulsen family from Round Hill, so
when my husband's work brought us to Virginia, it was only natural that we would
choose Round Hill to live in and raise our son. For these reasons, I humbly ask you
to consider naming our new park The Niels Poulsen Memorial Park in honor of my
great-great grandfather who helped build the town.
